The Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand now comprises some 175 members and has accorded Honorary Memberships to several international visitors of outstanding excellence. The Society enjoys a very close relationship with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and is a co-operative partner in the redefinition of the best format for high quality general surgical and specialty colorectal training within Australia and New Zealand.

The Society has fostered and carried out specialised workshops for its members on follow-up programmes for patients after colorectal cancer surgery, best practice guidelines for surgery for colon cancer and for rectal cancer and practical workshops on specialised techniques such as laparoscopy.

The Training Board in Colon and Rectal Surgery comprising representatives from the Society and the Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery of the College of Surgeons, administers a world class two year training program in colon and rectal surgery.

The CSSANZ Council recommends that any hospital or health service advertising or making an appointment for a colorectal surgeon indicate that a criteria for selection would include: either membership of CSSANZ or having completed the criteria for membership of CSSANZ.

In the two decades of development of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand, the cornerstones of its ideals remain as dedication to TRAINING, STANDARDS, RESEARCH and EDUCATION.
