The Bi-National Colorectal Cancer Audit (BCCA) is a CSSANZ initiative used for clinical audit of the surgical practices of Australian and New Zealand surgeons for the purpose of quality assurance as well as research. First established in 2007 the database went online in 2013, making it more accessible, more useful and easier than ever before. The audit is applicable to all surgeons who see patients with a diagnosis of colorectal cancer.
Some of the inbuilt features include:
Reminders for incomplete data.
In built reporting – outcomes, morbidity, mortality, comparisons and inpatient reports
Ability to upload existing data sources
Multiple access levels – e.g. consultant and site manager access
Interested surgeons should contact BCCA Staff (contact details below) to arrange registration and hospital ethics.
The BCCA 2019 Report
BCCA continues to grow and this year’s report presents over 28,000 treatments episodes submitted from 2007-2018.

BCCA Clinical Quality
The BCCA Clinical Quality Policy was ratified in 2017 and in 2018 we hope to pilot individualised quality reports to a select number of hosptials. For more information please contact the BCCA Project Manager on the below details.
BCCA Data Access
In accordance with the BCCA Data Access Policy researchers affiliated with BCCA users can submit data requests to BCCA to access deidentified data. Please see the above Data Access Policy for more detail and to find out how to submit an application. If you would like to submit a data application please contact BCCA staff. Currently approved research projects can be found on the BCCA homepage https://bcca.registry.org.au/
BCCA Data Extraction
BCCA users can download their own raw data to Excel anytime securely and simply. This feature is accessible via the online interface. Simply log in, go to the Data tab, and hit Data Extract. The data that users can access is defined by their role in BCCA. If a user is logged in as a Surgeon their can download all of their own data, if the user is logged in as a Site Manager they can access all of their site’s data. This removes any risk in managing data requests and related transfer of such information and provides a safe and reliable environment for BCCA users to access their data.
More information about the output file can be found in the Data Extract Key which is located on the BCCA log in page https://bcca.registry.org.au/
